Sleep: Why and How

Feeling irritable? Not present for your kids? Feeling overwhelmed? All of us would have experienced nights when we did not get enough sleep, or have been jet-lagged; we know the ‘fogginess’ and irritability that we suffer the next day as a consequence. Adequate sleep is as fundamental and neccessary to our functioning and well-being as air, food and water.
Singapore is one of the most sleep-deprived countries in the world, averaging about 6.5 hours of sleep a night, significantly shorter than the recommended 7.5 – 8.5 hours of sleep we should be getting each night. This chronic sleep deprivation affects our relationships, emotional regulation, work performance and our ability to be mindful and present. Major accidents have been linked to sleep deprivation.
We know that chronic sleep deprivation contributes to burnout, stress, anxiety and depression. It also increases the risks of obesity, diabetes, dementia and premature death. It blocks optimal brain development in children.
In this workshop, a case for prioritising sleep, and why well-being without adequate sleep is not achievable will be made. The socioeconomic costs and physical and mental effects of sleep deprivation will be covered. ‘Normal’ sleep will be described. Find out what happens in your body and brain while you are sleeping. For therapists, guidance will be shared on how to identify inadequate sleep, and how to coach your clients to improve the quality and quantity of sleep.
