Working with the Disease of Addiction

Our speaker, Mr Andy Leach, the Clinical Lead of the Cabin, an addiction treatment centre based in Chiang Mai will be giving an overview of the Disease of Addiction, looking at the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s public policy statement that defines the disease. He will also discuss how to recognise addiction in all its many forms and will provide guidance for assessment. This will lead into an overview of how the specialists work with Addiction at the Cabin, looking at Addiction in all its many forms. At the end, there will be a question and answer session.
Workshop Content
This Skills Enhancement Workshop will focus on what exactly is the ‘Disease of Addiction’ – how to define it, its etiology and how to recognize it.
Having defined what addiction is and how it is likely to develop, participants will look at its various different manifestations. This will include helping clinicians to know what to look for when working with the addicted population, and whether on initial presentation what is witnessed is full blown addiction or signs of the progressive characteristics of the illness.
The workshop will then focus on the various different ways of working with the illness, whether this be total abstinence or harm minimization. Various different approaches to working with the addicted population will be considered.
The workshop will culminate in a question and answer session, with an opportunity to discuss any current cases.
Learning Outcome
Participants will leave this workshop with a greater understanding of the disease of addiction, what to look for during assessment and how to recognize symptoms of the illness. There will also be a brief overview of how the addiction work is being done at the Cabin Chiang Mai.
